About Mr. Wesson

About - Me
- Matt is an enthusiastic, friendly, caring and confident psychotherapist who is accredited in both CBT and EMDR with over 18 years’ experience in the field of mental health. He is able to treat a wide range of difficulties and has a track record of success with people from a variety of backgrounds. He lives locally in West Cheshire with his young family and enjoys keep fit, playing the guitar and walking his dog.

About - Eye Movement Reprocessing and Desensitisation (EMDR)
- EMDR is an innovative type of approach that can work where other therapies have failed because it goes deeper than just talking. It is very effective in a wide range of conditions including PTSD, trauma, low self-esteem, bereavement, phobias, depression, chronic pain and performance anxiety. EMDR can help unlock difficult past memories helping you recover from them by utilising the brain’s ability to heal itself.
The alternating left-right stimulation of the brain with eye movements, sounds or taps during EMDR, stimulate negative memories in a way that then lose their intensity, so they become less distressing and seem more like ’ordinary’ memories. Its sounds strange but it really works and it now has a huge scientific research base to prove its effectiveness.

About - Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
- CBT is a structured form of therapy. Research has shown that CBT is probably the most effective treatment for a variety of emotional and psychological problems. In short - it works! It tackles how your thinking & actions in the ’here & now’ are keeping your problems going. It teaches you to become your own therapist leaving you more able to deal with your problems effectively in the future.

My training, work experience and any achievement

- I specialise in trauma, PTSD and common mental health problems through his 20 years’ experience in the military both in the UK and combat zones abroad. I have been working in private practice for over 5 years with people with a variety of difficulties and pride myself on helping clients make real positive and long lasting changes in their lives.
- I have been using EMDR for nearly 14 years in my clinical practice and now supervise many other clinicians in this hugely effective approach. I am also one of only 7 EMDR Trainers in the UK and Ireland.
- I have been utilising CBT for many years and I completed my formal CBT training at Oxford University which is considered the leading CBT training institution in the UK.
- I am also a skilled supervisor of other clinicians, presenter, trainer and author in psychotherapy and health promotion.

A few months ago I was dominated by the dragon of trauma. I couldn’t escape from it’s all consuming, smothering and choking oppression. I knew it’s chill, the fire of it’s breath, it’s jagged scales, colour and deafening roar. The dragon is now a domestic animal that harmlessly munches on grass in the field next door. It has found a new purpose. When I walk the dog I keep his lead on to prevent a skirmish, but when I shoo the beast out of the way, it moves. We each keep our respectful distance but there is now no fear and I even forget about its existence for most of the time. I can’t say it’s an old friend but we both acknowledge we’ve journeyed together. I am now a couple of months on from a course of therapy that included EMDR. The transformation has been immense. EMDR achieved what talking therapy could not. Post therapy I am now well, in good spirits and with trauma behind me. This has proved to be a huge marker to have passed. Looking back I was in a place where I was wondering if I would need to take early retirement out of self-preservation, and even then wondered if there was life beyond. I am confident that I am now in a totally different place. I feel very different and back in business. I am enjoying my work and plan for the future. There is no fear because I know there is help if I need it again. I find it hard to imagine the possibility as it’s all over now and the story has become boring. Thank you Matt for your kindness, help and professional expertise.

I came to Matthew after struggling with anxiety and depression in work after a period of prolonged high stress. Through 6 sessions we worked together to utilise the ACT framework to help me focus on being more comfortable in myself and leading a value focused lifestyle. Matthew’s style and approach was very calm and supportive and focused on tailoring my therapy to not only my specific needs but my personality type as well. I would recommend Matthew to anyone who is looking for a therapist to help move past a situation like the one I found myself in.

This time last March in a university coffee shop, I, a perfectionist, was attempting to complete a given essay whilst negotiating excruciating battles with my mind, where anxiety would find me tucking my head into the sofa of my study booth. I was prescribed diazepam, sertraline and was in panic attacks where “I felt trapped” and couldn’t regulate my breathing. I would try and try to regulate my thoughts, but get irritated with not knowing how to... As soon as Matt welcomed mum and myself into his room, my nerves were gone. Matt’s rooted personality, professionalism and warmth is everything I could have dreamed of in a therapist. He made his goal clear: “James I want you to become your own therapist”. Admittedly I was skeptical about talking therapies, like what can he say to me to make me think differently. However, from session one you’ll discover so many- crudely put, light-bulb moments where your perspective and intensity of thoughts is overhauled. You work through how to tackle worry as a concept rather than delving into specifics. With Matt I felt so accountable, yet unjudged and assured that with my effort I was going to achieve results. Matt discusses and assesses with you which strategies are working most effectively so the therapy you receive is always pertinent and precise. Within one week I felt massive progression. I am 100% certain that without Matt I wouldn’t of achieved 3 offers for places at renowned London musical theatre schools. Post trauma growth is a marvellous thing. I was so hesitant, so doubtful and now I can’t believe how wrong I could have been. Out of all my schooling, my A*s and life experiences, I know my time with Matt has been by far the most transformative and valuable.Everyone needs a “mini Matt in their life” and I hope Matt will never forget my words of one session late last year where I commented “I would pay millions for this”

I struggled a lot with anxiety and within only a few sessions with Matt I felt a huge improvement in my day to day life. Many months on after therapy I am still following through with all the things he taught me and helped me with. Really impacted my life.

I have a long history of mental health issues, and have tried counselling which didn’t work for me and I was referred to Matt and found him to be very.empathetic.I have noticed that issues which have been deep seated in my mind, seem to have become lesser and as a result, have helped me move on. Thanks Matt

I first went to Matt as I had reached a real low. I was struggling with life and had faced a recent trauma. Life was hard and I didn’t know how to cope, I was in a very black hole. Quite simply Matt changed my life. He introduced me to EMDR therapy which together with some other techniques he taught have turned my life around. I feel a level of contentment I could only ever of dreamed of. I have gone on to get a new job, start my own business, come off my medication and feel a level of everyday happiness I couldn’t even dream about before. Don’t even hesitate- go and speak with Matt...he changed my life, he could change yours too

Matt has had an extremely positive impact on my life from a situation that happened to me in which I was left with trauma and anxiety which affected my life greatly. I will be forever grateful to Matt for how he has helped to turn my life around and helped me with my overall perspective in life. I experienced CBT with Matt and together we put in place careful strategies to build myself back up again. I couldn’t thank Matt enough and would recommend him to anyone.

I was presented to Matthew with PTSD, BPD and Adjustment Disorder. My BPD was very high due to the PTSD and i wanted my BPD to become less dominating and my PTSD to not control my life. I was suicidal (attempting suicide 3 times prior to treatment from Matthew), anxious, depressed and my life seemed to be a mess. Matthew used EMDR and CBT and enabled me to achieve everything i wanted and much more. I am now so happy in life thanks to Matthew and his treatment, he is worth every penny and i am so grateful for everything. The treatment has enabled me to view life positively, it has suppressed the trauma that i faced and has enabled me to remember memories related to the trauma without feeling suicidal but in a happy way. I can now listen to songs that reminded me of the trauma and smile. Matthew and his treatment have allowed me to regain my life! Matthew helped me to save my life.

I had been on long term sick prior to seeing Matt and basically had no answers from the GP’s and specialists what was up with me. I was in a terrible state and spent most of my time in bed and having no energy what so ever. Matt has totally transformed me as a person where I am now back full time at work and living life again. I cant thank him enough for what he has done for me and would recommend him extremely highly.

Visited Matt as I was suffering anxiety & panic attacks, due to unhappy and stressful marriage i was in. Matt was the right person at the right time for me, and taught me coping mechanisms,to give me the courage and strength to leave the relationship, and deal with the aftermath. Thank you so much Matt, for your support.

The sessions with Matt gave me practical and helpful techniques which I now use everyday. Having suffered with anxiety and worry for years Matt helped me to take a step back and understand it. I feel like I got to truly know myself and this insight has changed my whole perspective not only on the day-to-day but my life in general. People around me have commented on how much more relaxed, confident and happy I am. I feel the best I have ever felt and more importantly, in control.

I was going through a horrible situation and had read about various options and I’m so glad Matt and CBT was one of them. I have to admit I was very sceptical but Matt’s sessions really helped me understand and eventually overcome. I would highly recommend him and urge others to not delay. Thanks again Matt

I am so happy and relieved that I found Matthew. He treated me with CBT and EDMR. It has been wonderful success and I cannot thank Matthew enough. After over 10 years on antidepressents I am reducing them and feel that my life is starting over. I feel really positive about the future and see my home, my family, my life, in a wonderful happy new light. Thank you Matthew.

G, Weaverham, October 07 2013

I found Matt, to be compassionate, thoughtful and insightful. I had CBT and without a doubt it has restored my sanity and wellbeing - CBT is a tool for life that has propelled me forward to living in the moment instead of dwelling on the negatives. I cannot recommend Matt highly enough...he’s wonderful!

I found Matthew easy to talk to, the rapid eye movement was great. I stopped taking my antidepressants started taking about my problems more openly. I would recommend this treatment as it has made me a positive person again. Thank you Matthew.

What can I say? I found exactly the right person to help me through a truly dreadful, unexpected crisis. The initial assessment session was used to effectively identify the areas that needed input. Matthew sensitively balanced listening with redirecting my thoughts to the real issues, and wisely helped me prioritise them. He repeatedly provided real insight into my issues and gave me just the right amount of advice I could take on board at a given time. The therapy was truly effective and it included a wide variety of techniques and explanations to help me move on. There is no way I could ever have coped as well without Matthew’s input, and I’m now looking ahead in a completely different frame of mind! Thank you Matthew. Your work is priceless.
